December 2011

We will have four litters in February and March 2012!
Plum, June, Rosa and Lily are in pig. Sire of all four litters is friendly Tutaki boar Fluffy. And yes, his colour really is carrot-orange.

Ready for winter. Bought twenty packages of haylage and a trailer full of fodder beet.
Some fields beginning to look like a swamp. Glad we did put tiles around our pig huts.
Black ice this morning. Boar-piglets Oscar and Jack were slipping on the tiles, Rosa fell flat on her face and tore her lip. An extra portion fodder beet gave some comfort.
Betsey is gaining wait again, she lost too much (well relatively speaking) feeding her last litter. Also starting to look half decent again after totally (think ´bald`) blowing her coat.

Kunekune to Berlin for city children!
Two of our little (castrated) boars left for Berlin and now live in Tierhof Alt Marzahn.
Tierhof Alt Marzahn is an educational city farm, part of a three hundred years old village, now fully enclosed by the high-rise buildings of Berlin.
Every year more than 50.000 people visit the city farm and 300 school classes have tours for educational projects and fun. Employees read fairy tales, and other stories, to the youngest kindergarten children, with the farm animals as ‘living’ figurants.

Our kunes Max and Moritz are already feeling at home and fully loving all the attention.
We are looking forward to visiting them in Germany in the future.

September 2011

Annette, William and I gave our day long ‘kune kune pig keeping workshop’, this time at Annette’s place. A lovely sunny autumn day, enthusiastic and happy participants... and the pigs had a blast (a lot of cuddling).
Lots of theory but also enough time for 'hands-on' experience.

Next workshop will be spring 2012.

September 2011

And now something completely different…..

These three girls are here to assist our pigs keeping the grass down. Our Walliser Schwarznasen... Swiss mountain sheep, now on flat peat land. Quiet and cuddly, so a good match with our not so quiet and cuddly kunes.

Plum’s litter!

Rain or shine, these girls are always ‘into wellness’, especially mud-baths. Pigs!!

Boisterous piglets on a raid!

July 2011

One of our first piglets, now Rosie in her new home, as… Hollands Next TopModel!
Esight Photography came to take some pictures of the dogs but couldn’t resist the kune kunes. Turned out the kunes were more obedient than the dogs. Must have been some dogs.

They did do 'a tiny bit' of photoshopping, in daily life Rosie is a real pig.

Betsey's litter....

... and Rosa's litter.

June 2011

Visited the UK for a few days.
The Royal Bath and West Country Show.

And what do kunekune breeders find when exploring the Jurrasic Coast?! Ofcourse, a shark coprolite.. or 200million years old shark-dung! Our guide was surprised we spotted such a nice species. Might be because we muck out our pig-fields twice a day?

And for everyone who thinks kunekunes are large pigs......

March 2011

Plum’s litter, week two!

Boar Tom didn’t like our hay until he saw the girls eating it. Must be very good stuff if they like it that much?!

One of the first piglets we ever sold is back, after one and a half year, for a date with our boar Tom! Looks like she still feels at home.
